Irene D. Layden
December 17, 1939 – March 5, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Irene D. Layden, age 85, who passed away on March 5, 2025. She was the daughter of the late Matthew and Victoria Kumor. Irene was the beloved wife of John J. Layden, with whom she shared 67 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they were high school sweethearts who built a beautiful life filled with love, adventures, and memories, especially through their shared passion for travel and road trips across the United States.
Irene was a loving and devoted mother to John P. Layden (Valerie), Michael J. Layden (Christine), and Colleen Layden. Her family was everything to her, and she took great joy in being a hands-on, caring mother and grandmother. Irene was a proud grandmother to Caroline Layden, Christine Layden, Kathleen Frazier (Christian), Michelle Parmigiani (Christopher), Scott Albert (Sophie Cheetham), Eric Albert, and the late Michael J. Layden Jr. Beloved great-grandmother to Nicholas, Gabrielle, Michaela, Noah, Dominic, Freya, and Bodhi. Irene was also the dear sister-in-law of Marjorie Wilson.
A woman with many talents, Irene was known for her skill as one of the best bargainers, particularly during her frequent trips to antique shops, where she would seek out treasures and negotiate with charm. She was also known for her ability to stay connected with family and friends, always reaching out to maintain relationships and spread love. Irene was a strong supporter of her husband's entrepreneurial spirit and stood by his side as he followed his dreams.
Irene's warmth, kindness, and zest for life will be remembered by all who knew her. She was a true friend, a loving wife, and a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Irene’s legacy is one of love, adventure, and a never-ending commitment to those she held dear.
Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Saturday, March 15, 2025, beginning at 9 AM at the Slabinski Sucharski Funeral Home, 2614 Orthodox St., Philadelphia, PA 19137. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11 AM at St. John Cantius Church, 4320 E. Thompson St., Philadelphia, PA 19137. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, Irene's family requests that, in her memory, you call a friend or relative you haven't spoken to in a while to spread love and connection, just as she did in life.
