Elizabeth "Betty" M. Godowsky

July 29, 1936 — September 3, 2023

Philadelphia

On September 3, 2023, Elizabeth “Betty” Godowsky passed away at age 87. Surviving Betty is Ted, her husband of 62 years, her sons Ted III (Sandra)and Joe (Patricia), grandchildren Joseph M. Jr., Amanda Buchanan (Jason), Danielle Weber (Tristan), Candace Mason (Willie), Joshua Godowsky and Dandra Alvarado and great grandchildren Harper Buchanan, Kinsley Buchanan and Serenity Alvarado. Betty was also the mother of David, who preceded her in death. Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, Gottlieb and Mary Hettich, her sister Catherine Dowd, and her brother Gottlieb Hettich Jr.

When Betty’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was typical for wives to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the times, Betty was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help, regularly putting her own needs aside to help and take care of others. She selfishly cared for her mother when she was ill, her father in his later years, and also for her sister when she was ill.

Betty loved to send out greeting cards to everyone she knew, never forgetting a holiday, birthday, or special occasion. You would sometimes even receive a card from her for no particular reason at all.  She had a passion for ensuring everyone she knew felt special.  And she always ensured that every child who crossed her threshold knew that someone cared for them.  She made Halloween and Easter goody bags for the neighborhood children who knew her as Ms. Betty.

Betty had several sayings and phrases that she is well known for by her family and friends.  “Be Happy”, “Love You to The Moon”, and “Love You More” are some of the most memorable ones we will always remember.  Betty will be sadly missed by all who knew her. We rest in knowing that she is now “Dancing in the Hall” with her sister Catherine and other beloved relatives who have passed over the years.
